There may be circumstances under which you can have part or all of your federal loan forgiven or discharged. A loan discharge is a release of a borrower's obligation to repay his or her loan, either in whole or in part. That means you don't have to pay that portion back. The program has loan discharges to provide debt relief to a borrower under certain circumstances. Loans other than under the federal programs may not be subject to these conditions of forgiveness. The following are reasons that a loan may be forgiven under the federal programs.

  • Borrower dies
  • Total and permanent disability
  • Bankruptcy (in some cases)
  • Child Care Provider Loan Forgiveness Program
  • Loan Forgiveness Program for Teachers
  • School Closure
  • False certification…
    • as to student's eligibility by the school
    • of an unauthorized signature
    • of an unauthorized payment
